Witnesses

Which crimes#

The big heists have their alarms and cameras. Small street crimes go through witnesses instead: convenience store robbery, dealer takings, debt collection, hit contract, killing a debtor, street dealing, street hustle takings and street race.

See convenience stores, dealing, the stroll, network, debt collection, street races and hits. Car theft has its own report system (see stars), and tags have their own witnesses.

How it goes down#

1. The crimePassers-by on foot who see you, within 35 m (20 m at night), can become witnesses. Not all of them: roughly 50%, at least one, 3 at most. Closest first.
2. They filmPhone up, pointed at you, for 3 s. A red tag over their head and a dot on your map show them to you.
3. They runThen they take off to make the call. The clock runs from the crime: 20 s in all.
4. The callThe first one who gets away calls the cops: you get the crime's stars. Every witness after that who gets away adds $750 to your bounty.

Nobody around? Nobody calls, zero stars. A message tells you so.

Shutting them up#

Any player can shut a witness up: your crew can help you chase them down.

What skips all that#

• A cop sees you do it, within 30 m: no witnesses, the stars drop right away.
• A witness already called: until that incident is over, a new street crime gives you its stars on the spot.
• Already wanted at that level or higher: witnesses change nothing to your stars.
