What everyone asks on their first night. Short answers, and the right page to dig deeper.
Do I have to roleplay?#
No. Zero RP, zero character rules. No hunger, no licences, no legal jobs. You're a criminal, you play it like GTA.
What do I lose when I die?#
All the cash on you, your bought weapons and whatever you were carrying: it all stays in a bag on your body, which everyone sees on the map and anyone can search. Your bank, your reputation and your stored cars stay put. Details in Death and respawn.
How do I keep my money safe?#
At the bank (10% fee, but deposit more than $10,000 within 15 min and the teller calls the cops) or with a launderer (25% to start with, but never any cops). Withdrawing is free, at the bank or any ATM. With stars on you, neither will take your cash: lose the cops first. It's all in Cash and bank.
How do I lose the cops?#
Get out of the search area without being seen, or hide until the stars go out. You can also surrender by holding X: shorter sentence, but you end up in prison. See Losing the cops, wanted stars and getting arrested.
Where do I respawn?#
At the spawn point nearest to where you died, or at home if you have an apartment. Killed by a player, you come back far from them. Up to level 2, always in Los Santos. See Death and respawn.
How do I level up?#
By pulling off jobs: robberies, contracts, cars, burglaries, dealing... Each level opens better guns and better cars. See Reputation.
I can't buy a gun or a car#
It's above your reputation level. The unlock chart is on the Reputation page.
Can I redo my character?#
No, it's final once confirmed. Clothes and haircuts, though, can be changed in stores whenever you like.
Can I have two characters?#
No. Your character is tied to your Rockstar account: one account, one character. You find it on any PC.
Why do I only have two weapons?#
That's on purpose: two slots on you, 3 more weapons in the bag. You swap your carried weapons from the inventory (I), which takes an animation. Hold TAB to pick between the two. See Inventory.
How do I change the language?#
/lang en or /lang fr, or in your phone Settings. You're also asked on your first login.
Is there a dark theme?#
Yes: /theme nuit (and /theme casier to go back), or phone Settings > Interface.
How do I play with my friends?#
Start a gang: the Gang app on your phone. Crewmates on the map, gang chat (/eq), and a buddy with a medkit can revive you when you go down.
Can I see other players on the map?#
No. Not them, not you. You only see your crewmates, bounties and targets.
Are there places where nobody can shoot me?#
Yes, safe zones, in green on the map. Unless you have a bounty, stars, or just came out of a gunfight.
If I log out, do I keep my stars?#
Yes, for 30 min. And quitting with stars or right after a gunfight drops your cash on the ground. See Combat rules.

/tutorial: you pick it up where you left it. Even veteran players can start it. See the tutorial.
